SF TO PA
San Francisco to Palo Alto
[ objective ]
The objective is to write and design a book from recording things that I see, hear, touch and smell as a journal. The look and feel of the book entirely reflect a central theme of daily observations.
[ approach ]
My challenge was going to a place where I’ve never been outside of San Francisco, so I chose to record things while taking Caltrain’s Baby Bullet from San Francisco to Palo Alto from 8:56 to 9:41 am. The train stopped at just a few stations, so I went out and explored to find things that I might have missed at each station. I photographed outside through the window, observed people’s behavior and recorded situations in the train. I took three round trips for this journal. However, it was worth it to step outside of my comfort zone and learn to observe things around me. Finally, I interpreted everything through writing, typography and photography as a solid overarching concept in the book. The colors used are red, the color of the Baby Bullet, and green and gray, which represent the new route that I followed. I used the space of the book to play with the composition because it’s like I’m exploring on a new journey.
